Aviation Weather Report Code


Prior to the introduction of METAR code for surface weather observations in 1995 (in the United States), aviation weather reports used another code. The decoding cards from 1964, 1966 and 1970 are, shown below. In later years the symbols for clear, scattered, broken, and overcast were replaced by the ASCII text of CLR, SCT, BKN, OVC, respectively, for easier parsing by computers.
